That guy with the camera
I've been coming to Cape Cod for, well, decades. During that time, we frequently drove past a simple white house with black shutters. Outside was a plain white wooden sign that said “Richard Walker. Lawyer”. A few years ago we noticed that the sign had changed to read: “Richard Walker. Artist”. It blew my mind. Wow, people can redefine themselves. Who knew? I’ve practiced law and run a small legal technology business for many years. And while I’m a far, far cry from calling myself an “artist”, I'm grateful to Richard for giving me the push I needed to finally pick up my camera, go outside, and risk trying something that I’d been “meaning to do" for years.

So... after years of waffling, equivocating and generally avoiding it, I finally "got into" photography. Yeah, I had a bathroom darkroom in high school and all that. But the bar to being a teenage "photo guy" was pretty low and I got by with a few Ansel wannabe shots and a decent grasp of jargon. As an adult I remained interested, but there was the matter of kids, a career and a general unwillingness to take risks. So it was vacation snaps, and lots of 'em. Once the kids left home, and work slowed down, I had more time. I was going to spend more time on photography "one of these days". It just wasn't clear in what century those days would be.

Finally, a few years ago, right around a round number birthday, I said "what the hell"? Landscapes! What could be better? So I decided to take the chance of falling down and committed to trying.

Bu it turned out I had a lot of learning to do. My tricks and jargon from high school were totally obsolete, so it was on to endless hours of photography articles, tutorials and - Amen! - YouTube videos. Hundreds of YouTube videos. And many hours of practice, just trying to learn some of the moves.

Cape Cod seemed like the perfect subject. This site is what I've come up with so far (well, what I'm willing to show publicly anyway). And, OK, Ansel has nothing to fear. But I'm having fun. It's great to get out into nature. And I can lose myself for hours and hours in Lightroom and Photoshop, imagining stuff and trying to bring what I imagine to life.
